Convert old road bike to singlespeed?

I inherited an old road bike, specifically it's a '85 Panasonic, which has the old downtube shifters and such. I do have a spare modern wheelset, which has a 9speed cette. Could I use that, remove the derailleurs, and just install a singlespeed chain and then tension the chain with the horizontal dropout? Any inputs are welcome!
