Nail polish for silver chain with pendant?

Hi, just bought a big silver pendant with 3 strand silver chain. Was told that i could apply clear nail polish to prevent silver pendant from tarnishing. feasible to do likewise for the 3-strand silver chain? Will paint peel off since chain curvy n nt flat? Will it peel off the pendant? Do i remove nail polish with polish remover? will it spoil the silver? someone also suggested using toothpaste to clean the silver? Will it really remove the tarnishing? tks
