Xsi aperture problem?

i have the xsi but im having a little problem w/the DOF. for example if im taking a picture of dominoes and i want to show shallow dof how come when i set the aperture to 5.6 the image doesnt look right. Its as if I just focused on one part of the domino, like the focus is my only source for dof. help please.
