How should I store fabric?

I'm a bit of a sewing hobbyist and store all of my fabric in a large sealed plastic container. Is this a bad way to store fabric? If so, how should I store it? I don't want all my expensive fabric to get ruined. Also, I am quite busy so I hardly ever get a chance to do anything with that fabric, so it pretty much just sits untouched in that container for months at a time.
